Waftlings

or also known as "Squirrel Dragons"

Waftlings are a strange subspecies of the draco genus.
They can easily be recognized by their wingmembranes and the glossy, translucent skin. They can't perform magic or spit fire like other dragons, instead their bodies are inherently magic themselves!

SPECIES GUIDE

Waftling Species Guide

They are an OPEN species - you can make your own!
If you want to make a hybrid or a creature inspired by Waftlings, sure go ahead! But do not recreate them and call it your own species, that is all I ask ❤

THE MAGIC INSIDE

Waftlings have the most unique body ever recorded - it is primarly made up of three things: a skeleton, a gelbody and a pretty fur coat in all colors and patterns you can imagine.

The skeleton is not of any use anymore, it is merely a remnant of evolution replaced by the use of the magical gelbody;
The body is primarly made up a special gel which functions as a singular organ! It does the functions of muscles, a digestive system AND a reproductive system.
It is usually translucent but some Waftlings also have a completely opaque gelbody.
A fur coat covers the gelbody and can be of any length and thickness. It can cover none or all parts of the gel body.

IS IT AN AIRPLANE??

Waftlings have a membrane that stretches from one front leg to the other across their back with two "tails" fanning out behind like the tails of a fancy tailcoat.

When they jump off a high ledge they tuck in their back legs, straighten their body and tail and stretch out their front legs to the side and their membrane fans out like a large blanket allowing the Waftling to gently glide to the next ledge.Parent Waftlings often use that membrane to spread it over their little ones to hide, shelter or warm them. It's a sign of great affection and protection to be blanketed by a Waftling.

SPECIALIZED FOOT WEAR

Waftlings have rather mismatched legs - soft front paws with retractable claws that remind one of cat paws and strong rear talons with large claws not unlike other dragons.
Both front and rear legs have paw pads which can secrete a sticky substance that helps the Waftling to stick to smooth surfaces - you better check the ceiling as well if you're playing hide and seek with one...

BIG HEAD, NO THOUGHTS

Their muzzles are square and rounded at the tip. The teeth have four canines and two fangs with molars in the back perfectly supporting their omnivore diet which can include any biological matter, including normal foods as well as insects and even poisonous plants.
With their long, prehensile tongue they can catch bugs like a frog or pick berries off bushes.
The horns growing out of their heads are always very simple in shape and never split into multiple tips.

GOING THROUGH CHANGES

Waftlings come in all sizes and colors!

Waftlings hatch completely naked and blind from teeny tiny eggs the size of a chicken egg. Within a few days they open their eyes and grow a long, fluffy coat. At this stage their diet primarly consits of small bugs and fruit. When they reached their teens at around 13 years they are going through a notable growth spurt lasting 8 years after which they will continue to grow for the rest of their life but at a much slower pace!Adult Waftlings can be ANY size, as small as a palm or as large as a castle. This entirely depends on how much they eat as well as their mentabolism. They do not excrete their food, they retain the energy for growth.
